1. Layer four sources in every room

A beautifully lit room almost always has four layers: ambient, accent, task, and decorative. Ambient sets the overall level. Accent draws the eye to architecture or art. Task lights the place you actually do something — chopping, reading, applying makeup. Decorative is the chandelier or pendant that the eye loves but that should rarely do the heavy lifting.

2. Build scenes around moments, not rooms

Instead of programming 'Living Room' and 'Dining Room' scenes, program 'Morning Coffee', 'Welcoming Guests', 'After Dinner', and 'Wind Down'.
